In 2019 when Amazon announced the new “Lord Of The Rings” tv series, I was ecstatic. This series takes place during the second age, before Bilbo and Frodo. I guess the first sign that this wouldn’t go well is that Tolkien didn’t write much about the second age, leaving a lot of room to add new stuff.
It is now 2022, and I’m still waiting. Soo…. I decided to do a little research. It turns out they’ve parted ways with the Tolkien Scholar, they’ve hired an intimacy coordinator, and they have also confirmed nudity. This is not Tolkien. This is not middle earth. I don’t understand their need to change Tolkien’s pure world. I know there are many reasons for nudity that don’t involve sex. Some might even seem necessary. However, we made it through 6 Tolkien movies without any nudity, so I’m not sure why they would find nudity necessary this round.
The LOTR is a book and movie that I put under my faith-based media umbrella, along with “The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe.” There are so few franchises that we can honestly claim as faith based, and so many secular books that involve elves and fey. The first one off the top of my head is “The Meredith Gentry Series” By Laurell K. Hamilton. It fits this new world to a T. So my question is why? Why convert the unique old world that Tolkien built to this new world? Why upset the fanbase to make a point? Why not just create a new franchise?
Honestly, after researching this project, I’m very disappointed in Tolkien’s estate. However, I will still give it a shot. I will watch it when it premieres on Friday September 2, 2022. I will be sure to update you all on my thoughts. Check back with us in a few months for a complete breakdown and review.
